Baking Soda is one of those universal things that can be used for anything from cleaning, to weed control, to personal care. Check out these 10 Helpful Uses For Baking Soda.

Tooth Care

Studies have shown that toothpaste with baking soda can can help whiten teeth. You can also make your own baking soda mouthwash and use on a daily basis to help clean and freshen your mouth. Simply stir 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in 1/2 cup warm water and swish around your mouth, making sure not to swallow.

Air Freshener

Most air fresheners mask smells, but baking soda actually eliminates them. Try this easy recipe to make your own air freshener. You will need:

Put your baking soda in the bottom of the jar and add your drops of essential oils. Cover jar with the cloth and tie it on with the ribbon or string. Set it anywhere in your house that you would like to neutralize odors.

Clothes Whitener

Baking soda is an alkali that reacts with the acids in stains when you dissolve it in your laundry water. Put 1/2 cup of baking soda in your washing machine before adding your clothes.

Cleaner For Tough Kitchen Stains

There are several items in your kitchen that can be cleaned with baking soda. Check out our article Use These Tips To Easily Clean Tricky Kitchen Areas with some great tips on cleaning with baking soda. It can also be used for:

  • ovens
  • stained marble
  • grease stains
  • kitchen tiles
  • clogged drains
  • tarnished silver
  • microwaves
  • countertops

Carpet Stain Remover

Combine baking soda and vinegar to remove tough stains on carpets. Here’s how.

  • Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the stain.
  • Fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar to 1 part water and spray over the baking soda
  • Let it sit until it dries.
  • Scrub with a scrubbing brush
  • Vacuum the residue. This should be pretty easy, but if there is some left, you can wipe it with a damp towel.

Cleaner For Scorched Pots

It can be really hard to get that burnt grime off of your pot, but don’t throw it away just yet. Try sprinkling a generous amount of baking soda on the bottom of the pot, and adding enough water to cover the dark spots. Bring to a boil and then dump in the sink. This should take away a large amount of black on the pot, and may even eliminate all of it. Clean what is left with dish detergent and a scrubbing sponge.

Refrigerator Deodorizer

Other than in baking, this is probably one of the most common uses for baking soda. Open a carton and set it in your refrigerator to keep those food odors at bay. It actually eliminates the odors instead of just masking them.

Safe Weed Killer

Baking soda has a lot of sodium, so sprinkling it on weeds can make it hard for them to survive. Try using this in gravel, cracks in cement, anywhere you don’t have other plants. Because the baking soda will kill most plants that it touches, you don’t want to use it in your garden or yard.

Treatment For Bug Bites And Bee Stings

Make a paste with baking soda and water, and put directly on your bug bites and bee stings (make sure to get stingers out first). It can take out some of the sting, if left on for several minutes. I have personally tried this for bee stings and it really works.

Shoe Deodorizer

Shoes can get super stinky, especially if you have teenagers that play sports. To combat the funk, put 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 2 pieces of cheesecloth and set in shoes when they are not in use. Make sure to take them out before you put them on.
