Carrying car insurance is one of those things that we all have to do, whether we think we need it or not. Car insurance laws are set and enforced at the state level, and 49 of the 50 states in America require all drivers to carry an active car insurance policy. If you have ever been in an accident, you know that good insurance is super important – but that doesn’t make paying premiums any easier. Here are a few tips to help you save on your insurance bill.
Take Advantage Of Multi-Policy Discounts
Many companies will offer you a discount if you carry multiple insurance policies through them, i.e. auto, home, renters, etc. Some even offer discounts if you sign up for life insurance. They also offer discounts if you have multiple cars on the same policy. Check with your agent to see what companies offer these kinds of discounts, and get quotes for each one.
Drive Carefully
Check into “safe driver discounts”. Depending on your insurance company, you could save up to 23%, just by having a clean record. Drivers are given a certain number of points for each accident or moving violation. The lower your points, the lower your premiums.
Some companies also offer a safe driving discount if you download an app that tracks your driving habits, such as hard braking, rapid acceleration, and driving late at night (12am to 4am). These apps will usually give you 10% off your policy when you start, and the savings can go up after your driving patterns are measured.
Take A Look At How You Pay Your Bill
Insurance companies will usually give you the option of paying your premium up front for a 6 month or 12 month block, or paying monthly. It is always cheaper in the long run to choose to pay up front for the block of time offered. This might be a good option if you can fit it into your budget. If you do pay monthly, setting up an automatic payment for your premiums to come out of your bank account, or use your debit card on a designated day each month will save you money.
Go Over Your Coverage
Read over your policy to see exactly what it covers. You many find that you have extras on there that you don’t really need. For example, you might think about removing your car rental coverage or roadside assistance. Remember that cheaper isn’t always better though, when it comes to coverage. Make sure to go over all of your options with your agent.
If You Have Teens, Look Into Good Student Discounts
Insuring teens can be insanely expensive. If your teen has a B average or above, you can likely get a discount on your policy by showing proof of their grades. Often times college students under the age of 25 can also get the discount. This is definitely one you will want to check into.
Closing Thoughts
In addition to the ones we listed, there are so many other discounts out there i.e. military, extra safety features, mileage usage, and more. Spend some time talking to your agent to find the right coverage for you, at a price that fits into your budget.
