Tons of Tips To Save At The Gas Pump

As fuel prices rise, a lot of us are looking for ways to save at the gas pump. We’ve done our research and found some tips that we hope will be useful in helping you save.

Don’t Let Your Car Idle

It can be tempting to start your car early so it can warm up or cool down before you head off to work, but doing so can waste gas, as well as cause more pollution.

Skip The Premium Option

Think about choosing gas with a lower octane IF your car is okay with it. Many experts agree that using a higher octane isn’t always beneficial. In a consumer notice, the Federal Trade Commission, notes: “In most cases, using a higher-octane gasoline than your owner’s manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It won’t make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage or run cleaner.”

Join a Club

Sam’s Club and COSTCO are both places that offer member only access and pricing on fuel.

Join a Fuel Rewards Program

Some gas station chains like Exxon Mobil, Shell, and BP will offer fuel rewards for every purchase you make. You can use those rewards for discounts on gas or items in their store. Walmart+ also offers a 10¢ per gallon discount on gas from 14,000 affiliated stations, including Mobil and Sam’s Club stations.

Play a Game

Circle K usually has a fun and easy to play game with gas discount prizes and other great things you can win.

Join A Grocery Store Rewards Program

Many grocery stores, such as Kroger and affiliates, have gas rewards features with their loyalty programs. For every purchase you make in the store, you will score rewards points that you can use to get a discount at the gas station. Shell’s grocery store rewards manages programs for supermarket chains from all across the country

Check Your Gas Cap

A loose gas cap can cause your gas to evaporate. Make sure it’s closed tightly after you fill up. Get a new gas cap if yours is loose.

Fill Up At The Beginning Of The Week

According to a 2019 gas analysis, gas prices are often the lowest on Mondays and Tuesdays, and raise on the weekend.

Accelerate Slowly and Don’t Speed, and Don’t Ride the Brakes

Generally the faster you accelerate, the more gas you use – up to 40% more, so slowing down a little can save you some change. Also, going over the speed limit also uses more gas, so don’t have a lead foot. Like to tailgate? Stop it. Riding the brakes can also burn excess fuel.

Take Some Weight Out Of Your Car

The heavier your car is, the more gas it will use, so clean out your trunk to avoid carrying extra items that you don’t need.

Roll the Windows Down

Yes, it’s hot. But that air conditioning costs BIG in the fuel department, increasing fuel consumption by up to 20% because of the extra load on the engine. So on those nicer days, roll the windows down and crank some tunes (We even have a free offer for Amazon Music!)

Keep up on Car Maintenance

Regular fluid, filter, belt and oil changes help keep your vehicle operating to give you the most fuel efficiency.

Carpool

Going to the same place? Get a ride and split the gas (plus throw in some extra for the wear and tear and mileage for the driver).

Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated

Over or under inflated tires can both negatively affect your miles per gallon. Check them with a tire pressure gauge regularly and fill them as needed.

Use a Gas Price Locator

A free site like Gas Buddy will give you the best fuel prices near you. VERY handy when traveling, too!

Pay Cash

Many stations have a different price for cash vs credit/debit. Just ask! Also see if your carwash that day qualifies you for a fuel discount.

Get a Rebate or Grab a Discounted Gift Card

Apps like UpSide offer cash back on gas purchases! You can also take advantage of discounted gas gift cards at Raise just search for your station or search GAS. Use our Raise referral link and you score $5 to spend for FREE.

We hope these tips help you save some $$ at the gas pump!
