One of the oldest, and most used seasonings is salt. Not only does salt taste good, the correct amounts are important for your health. However salt has many other uses that you might not think of. Check out some of these ideas.

Clean your fridge

Cleaning the fridge is a dreaded, but necessary task. For those stuck on food stains and smells, mix 1/8 cup of salt with 2 pints of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray your mixture on those nasty spots, let sit for a few minutes, and then scrub with a good scrubbing sponge.

Sanitize your cutting board

Cutting boards can harbor harmful bacteria when your knife makes grooves. Salt can be a great tool to help sanitize them. For your plastic board, sprinkle bleach and salt on it, scrub it with a stiff brush, and rinse with hot water. For wooden cutting boards, sprinkle salt and then scrub with a half lemon. Rinse with hot water.

Relieve bee stings

Whether you’re young or old, bee stings hurt. To help relieve the pain and swelling, get the spot wet, and sprinkle with salt. Remember that if your sting starts to swell a lot, especially if it is on your face or neck, seek medical attention right a way.

Natural mouthwash

Mouthwash from the store can contain chemicals that are not good for your body. Mix 1 teaspoon of table salt with 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and stir into 1/2 cup of water. Swish around in your mouth and then spit it out.

Relieve a soar throat

Mix 1/4 teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and gargle for 30 seconds. This can help relieve your soar throat by flushing out mucus.

Remove grass stains

More often than not, my kids come home from school with grass stains on their knees. To fight those nasty stains, squeeze fresh lemon juice over the stain, sprinkle on a thick layer of salt, and then rub the stain with the lemon rind. Then wash normally.

Kills weeds in the cracks of your driveway

Those pesky weeds in your cement cracks can be hard to get to. To kill them naturally, sprinkle salt and then pour hot water over them.

Deter ants

Ants don’t like salt, and will avoid going through it. If you see an ant trail going towards your house, sprinkle a line of salt to keep them from coming in.

Unclog a drain

Before calling a plumber, try this home remedy to unclog your drain. Mix 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of baking soda, and 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Pour it down the drain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then pour 2 pints of boiling water down before turning on the water. After a few seconds, it should be draining correctly.

Get sweat stains out of white shirts

Unsightly sweat stains may not necessary mean that the garment is ruined. Try soaking it in a pot of boiling water with 3 tablespoons of salt and 3 tablespoons of baking soda, then wash normally.

Remove blood stains

Speaking of stains, blood stains can be one of the hardest things to get out of your clothes. Try soaking your clothing in a a sink of cold water with 1 cup of salt. Then wash normally in your washing machine.
