Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

I love making my own spice mixes instead of buying them at the store. Not only can I control the ingredients, but it’s so much cheaper! And if you plan ahead, you can make a bunch of it at one time and just keep it in the pantry.

The one spice mix I never buy is taco/fajita seasoning. I’ve been making my own for over 10 years, and it includes spices I always have in my pantry. I also like to quadruple (or more!) the recipe so that I can use it for anything that could use a little bit of spice. Here’s my recipe for homemade taco seasoning!

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Have you ever noticed that there are lower-salt versions of taco seasoning? One reason I love making my own is that I can control the salt. You can even lessen the amount of salt you add to this if you need to!

This seasoning uses common spices that are easily available. Most of the ones in this picture came from Aldi, where spices are usually only about $1 a bottle!

I use a teaspoon measure to make one “recipe” of this taco seasoning. You need one teaspoon of everything except for the chili powder—you’ll use 3 teaspoons (1 tablespoon) of that.

Put them all in a bowl!

Then just stir it around. When you’re ready to add it to cooked meat, also pour in about 1/4 cup of water to moisten the meat and make the seasoning stick to it better.

I had a lot of spices on hand so I decided to make a bigger batch of the taco seasoning. The easiest option is to triple the recipe, because 3 teaspoons is 1 tablespoon. You’ll just add 1 tbsp. of every spice BUT chili powder and then 3 tbsp. of chili powder.

When you’re ready to use homemade taco seasoning from your bigger batch, use 3 tbsp. per pound of cooked meat. Enjoy!
