Dec. 1 Update:
Right now, get up to $300 off Dyson products through Dec. 2.
There are people in this world who have over-the-top, high-maintenance hair. For example, me. And perhaps you do, too. Maybe you aren’t sure which category your hair falls — ask yourself if it’s taking over 20 minutes to dry your hair to completion. If so, you, my unruly-haired friend, are in an exclusive group of hard-to-tame hair sufferers.
So I, and maybe you, don’t balk at the price tag attached to every single one of Dyson’s hair tools (and really all Dyson products). There’s a really good reason Mr. Dyson can charge what he can — they’re actually really kind of super spectacular.
I saved up my Ulta Ultamate Rewards points for two years until I finally accumulated a substantial enough discount to afford it at $429.99. I am now the proud owner of a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. After living with it for a few months, I can honestly exclaim that it was worth the wait. It has won countless awards, including an Allure Best of Beauty Award in 2023.
Why the Dyson Supersonic Blow Dryer Is the GOAT
Forget the fact the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer is really, really pretty on the outside. This machine is actually super powerful on the inside. Dyson claims right on their website that the Supersonic “is engineered to protect hair from extreme heat damage, with fast drying and controlled styling to help increase smoothness by 75%, increase shine by up to 132%, and decrease frizz and flyaways by up to 61%.” How does the Supersonic do that?
It all has to do with drying your hair without heat but using air instead. Its intelligent heat control prevents extreme heat damage. You’ll get several attachments that hold onto the Supersonic using magnets, but the new flyaway attachment uses the Coanda effect (like all Dyson hair tools) to lift and hide flyaways. This Coanda technology makes the Dyson, well, a Dyson. We don’t know of any other hair tool that uses it.
Dyson also uses Air Multiplier technology for quicker drying time with a high-velocity jet of air, Intelligent Heat Control to measure the airflow and Dyson’s V9 digital motor.
And to make them even more tempting, Dyson comes out with special editions around the holidays, like the Special Edition Supersonic Hair Dryer in Vinca Blue and Rose. But you’ll still be waiting well into the new year if you expect deals on these priceless beauties.
If you don’t have that kind of time, the inclination to spend that much, or your hair is so fabulous without it but you’re obsessed with the technology, you have options. To be considered a formidable alternative option, a Supersonic dupe must have similar specs, pretty high reviews with at least 4 stars, and a price tag that’s at least 50% cheaper ($215 and below) than the GOAT.
These are the hair dryers you can purchase (for much less than the Dyson Supersonic) that come with some of the same amazing specs:
