What Does It Mean To Embrace the Era You’re In?
Looking at our lives as a series of eras is a fun way to measure the passage of time and can also be a fun mental tool for staying present. Think of embracing the era you’re currently in as completely being in the moment and doing everything you can to live this current stage of your life to the fullest. After all, before you know it’ you’ll be in the next era of your life and feeling nostalgic for the one you’re in today.
Being in the parenting/new mom era of life can feel isolating for many. However, when you think about how many people are in the same era alongside you, it can feel a lot less lonely and a little more like a community.
Since parenting is a lot of hard work and becoming a parent for the first time can be daunting, it can be easy to feel like you’re just going through the motions. Walmart wants to empower parents and new moms who may be feeling this way. That’s why we tapped content creator and mom of three, Porsha Carr, to highlight products from Walmart that will help new parents fully lean into this era of life.
What Is a New Mom Era?
While it may be self-explanatory, a new mom era is the chapter of your life that you’re dedicating to raising your child and defining the parent that you are. Take it from Porsha who, since her oldest is nine, has been in the parenting game for nearly a decade. She still vividly remembers the transition of becoming a mom for the first time.
“For 24 years, it was all about me. And then all of a sudden, I have this little person. It’s not all about me.”
Porsha Carr
She continues on to say: “Just going from having to worry about myself to having to worry about a whole other human was a huge challenge, but it’s something that for most people, and for me, it just happened gradually.” Porsha began to believe in her ability to be a parent, saying: “I just started to start to think ‘Okay, we’re gonna do this.’ It just slowly became a part of me and it just was easy after that.” And while she admits it took some getting used to, she now believes motherhood is just the best.
As Porsha says, the transition may take time to feel natural. Don’t worry if you feel like you’re not fully leaning into your new mom era yet. Walmart, RetailMeNot and Porsha Carr are here with support and tips!
Advice for Fully Embracing Your New Mom Era
Since no two people are alike, embracing motherhood looks a little different for everyone, but Porsha has many thoughtful insights to share on the topic. When asked how she’s currently leaning into her motherhood era, Porsha shared that it’s all about embracing what she calls the two C’s: changes and challenges. Every day will bring something new — being able to roll with the punches is essential!
Something she wishes she’d known sooner is that no amount of parenting books or classes can fully prepare one for motherhood. If you’ve been putting pressure on yourself to cram before your due date, consider listening to this mother of three instead: “You kind of just have to roll with it.” There’s nothing wrong with learning in the moment through hands-on experience.
Another challenge that many parents and soon-to-be moms face is the unwarranted advice that seems to be given in abundance. If you haven’t experienced this yet, mentally prepare yourself now — but also keep an open mind. As Porsha puts it: “Someone is always giving their two cents. So just to be prepared for that.” She emphasizes that it’s important not to get upset. Ultimately, your kids are your kids and it is your opinion that matters the most, but it also helps to remember that not all advice is bad advice.
If you’re already in your parent era but are becoming a mother of multiples for the first time, Porsha recommends spending one-on-one time with each kid if you can. “It’s very vital because when there are multiple kids, sometimes it feels like somebody is not getting attention or somebody’s getting too much attention and you never want them to feel lesser than their sibling,” Porsha states.

RMN: Tell us a bit about yourself!
I am a mom of three girls, I’m a wife and I’m a lifestyle blogger. I blog about a little bit of everything but more on the parenting side. I also blog about recipes, travel, arts and crafts and all that good stuff. When I’m not writing, I love exercising. I love to run! I know most people don’t like to run, but I love to. I also love Disneyland and I love to hang out with my family.
RMN: How old are your three girls?
Eight, nine and two.
RMN: What is your overall advice for new moms?
So I know it sounds super cliche…but it is one of the best pieces of advice that I ever got. Sleep when the baby sleeps! I know there’s so much stuff you might want to do instead like pump or take a shower or just clean up — but getting that extra sleep is everything. Sleep when that child is sleeping, because you need to energize no matter how much you want to go and do other things. Sleep!
RMN: When you have some self-care time, what do you like to do for yourself?
I love that time. I love my kids, but I love to energize alone. I get up an hour and a half before the whole house. I go exercise or if I’m not exercising, I’m reading, drinking coffee, meditating or just watching TV. It feels good to have that time to be by yourself. If I can get out of the house then I like getting my nails done or getting a facial. It’s important that you have that time too. I think a lot of moms lose themselves in parenting. You have to be able to give yourself a hundred percent in order to give a hundred percent to everything else around you.
