It’s not always been easy to find discounts at IKEA. The store specializes in low-cost (but high quality and smartly designed) goods — and tends to stay out of the big-sale, big promo code marketing that other retailers engage in.
So, we were excited when, on Sept. 1, 2022, IKEA announced that its Family members could get 5% off practically everything when shopping in stores.
But bad news: That benefit is going away Feb. 1, 2024. IKEA announced this on its website in November 2023, with this reasoning: “IKEA will refocus on New Lower Price offers on hundreds of products across our range that emphasize everyday affordability.”
How to Get IKEA 5% Back — While You Still Can
Getting 5% back at IKEA can go a long way, especially when you’re furnishing a new home. Here’s how to make sure you get it:
- Join IKEA Family. IKEA Family is IKEA’s loyalty program. It’s totally free to join, and easy to sign up for. Create an account here. IKEA Family membership comes with a lot of other benefits, including free coffee (a requirement for any IKEA expedition).
- Go shopping. The IKEA 5% discount does not work online. You’ll need to shop in a store to get it. At checkout, just present your IKEA Family member card (if you have one). No card? Just give your IKEA family number. Your discount will get applied to your cart.
- Keep in mind there are some restrictions. You cannot use the discount on installation, assembly, IKEA gift cards, or restaurant/bistro purchases.
Can You Use the IKEA 5% Discount on IKEA Kitchen Remodel Services?
Yes and no. You can’t use the 5% discount for installation. But, if you select and order all your new cabinets, drawers, counters, appliances, etc. in store at an IKEA kitchen planning meeting, you still get 5% off on all that stuff. Just provide your IKEA family account number to your planning meeting consultant. When they place the order for you, you get 5% off. And yes, everything will be shipped to your house (no need to rent a truck and pick everything up at IKEA).
Kitchen remodels cost a few thousand dollars in materials, generally … which means you’ll get a few hundred dollars off with a 5% discount.
How to Make Up for the Loss of the IKEA 5% Discount
If you’re going to miss this program, there are still plenty of ways to save at IKEA. For example, be sure to check out our favorite treasure trove of discounts — the IKEA As-Is section.
Plus, you can join RetailMeNot’s cash back program and get paid to shop at hundreds of retailers. You can often get a LOT more than 5% back. Sign up here.
