The history: In the spring of 1970, Sen. Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin created Earth Day to force clean air and water issues onto the national agenda. More than 20 million people went out and demonstrated their support in different U.S. cities, and it worked! In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
