National Use Your Gift Card Day is held the third Saturday of every January to inspire shoppers to redeem the gift cards they received over the holidays. According to research performed by National Use Your Gift Card Day, about $15 billion in gift card balances will go unused of the $28.6 billion spent on gift cards. But those who do spend their gift cards are a boon for businesses — 59% of gift card recipients will spend over face value and 42% say they will watch for a good sale or promotion before spending their gift card. So, when it comes to gift cards, there’s a lot of dough to be saved and spent.
Because of the ease of purchasing a gift card at the recipient’s favorite store, it makes sense that gift card purchases are popular, but hopefully this doesn’t mean more money is left on the table. “People are so busy after the holidays, it’s no wonder they lose track of the gift cards they receive,” said Tracy Tilson, Founder of the national shopping holiday. “That’s why we came up with National Use Your Gift Card Day. It’s a reminder to rescue those unused gift cards and spend them before they’re forgotten.”
