According to Merriam-Webster, the word “Friendsgiving” didn’t show up until 2007, when it was first used in Usenet Twitter posts. The online resource went even further to point out that “It’s worth noting that while the TV show ‘Friends’ featured Thanksgiving episodes where the titular friends ate together, the word did not originate with the show.”
OK, whatever, Merriam-Webster. If we fans want to pay homage to “Friends” for giving us this alternative holiday to Thanksgiving, then we sure the heck can. Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Joey, Monica and Phoebe showed the world over 10 Thanksgiving celebrations in a row that it’s totally OK to share this special holiday with people who really feel more like family than friends. In our opinion, the cast paved the way for the Friendsgiving celebrations that followed, even if our favorite “Friends” squad didn’t call it that at the time.
