Lean Into Your Jet-Setter Era

Spring has officially arrived, and that means travel is on the brain at RetailMeNot! We’re all about finding the very best deals and exploring destinations far and wide, but what does it mean to step into your jet-setter era?

While the phrase “jet-set” might evoke images of movie stars stepping off private planes, you don’t need to be an A-List celebrity to get in on this trend. Being in your “jet-setter era” is all about exploration — whether that’s a weekend road trip upstate or the bucket-list trip you’ve been planning for years. With the right mindset, and a little help from Walmart, you can embrace a jet-set lifestyle in your own travels and daily life.

We teamed up with Vicki Rutwind, a Brooklyn-based travel blogger and social media content creator, to teach us all how we can lean into a “jet-setter era” with the help of Walmart. A once corporate lawyer turned explorer, Vicki has tons of experience prepping and planning for travel, and she knows exactly what to bring along to make your trip more enjoyable.

Embrace Your New Era With Walmart

Whether you’re planning your dream spring getaway or committing to exploring your own city like a true jet-setter, Walmart’s affordable selection makes it easy to embrace an era of exploration. “Shopping at Walmart before a trip is so convenient because they actually do have everything that you need,” states Vicki. From on-trend and under-budget new spring fashions to best-selling skincare and trending tech gadgets, travelers of all types can easily stock up on must-haves.

Gone are the days of running from store to store to pick up those last-minute travel essentials. The convenience of shopping on the Walmart app is one of the biggest reasons Vicki gravitates toward the retailer before heading out on a trip. “For me to get on the subway and chase down all that — that’s two days of just running around New York City!” The quick and convenient delivery is yet another reason to shop at Walmart before a trip.

And because being a true jet-setter is all about leaning into your main character energy, having the right clothes, accessories and skincare essentials to bring along will give you the boost of confidence you need. Walmart’s selection of new spring fashion arrivals from brands like Time & Tru, Scoop and Madden NYC are dropping just in time for your post-winter break. You can also shop on-the-go skincare and beauty favorites from brands like NYX and Neutrogena and tech essentials to help you capture memories. No matter where you’re headed in your “jet-setter era”, you can find everything you need to take along for the ride at Walmart.

Advice for Entering an Era of Travel

Vicki wasn’t always the frequent flier we see today. Originally from Edmonton, Canada, Vicki moved to New York City nearly 16 years ago to pursue her career as a corporate lawyer. She always loved to travel, but found it difficult to balance her jam-packed work schedule with her inner aspirations to explore. “I was in this profession where it was frowned upon to even take vacation days,” she shares.

Vicki made do with sneaking in weekend trips to destinations like Mexico or visits to her family home in Arizona when she could — even if it meant working on the car or even on the plane. It wasn’t until years later, on a long-awaited trip to Japan, that Vicki realized how passionate she truly was about travel. Seeing the country’s beautiful landscapes, immersing herself in the culture and navigating through a destination totally foreign to her gave her the boost of confidence she had been looking for. Even the little things made her appreciate the joy of exploring. “I got on the right train in a country where I couldn’t read all the signs or ask anyone for directions. I am good at this — I can do it!” Vicki jokes.

In April of 2018, Vicki took the leap towards embracing a life of adventure and quit her corporate job to start her blog, FashionTravelRepeat, and share her travels with the hundreds of thousands of followers she’s since amassed on social media.

Being in her “jet-setter era” is all about prioritizing travel and new experiences, but that doesn’t always mean hopping on a plane. Vicki encourages her followers to get out and explore destinations close to home, too. Going on a new hike or checking out a museum that’s been on her list are just some of the ways Vicki embraces an era of adventure in her everyday life. “I think it’s all about exploring new places and experiencing things that are new to you — because it’s your era!” Vicki concludes.

As a certified travel expert, Vicki also has some insights on this year’s hottest travel trends. If you’re looking for a little vacation inspiration, check out some of the trending destinations she’s suggesting below.

One of Vicki’s top tips for packing is to choose versatile pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. This Scoop Cut Out Midi Dress is a great option for everything from morning coffee runs, walks on the beach or post-dinner cocktails while vacationing. It features a feminine puff sleeve design and even has pockets for stashing your room key, passport or lipgloss. A comfortable and stylish pair of sandals is always a must-pack in Vicki’s suitcase. “You don’t want to bring 10 pairs of shoes on a trip,” she notes. Rather than pack a separate suitcase with all your favorite shoes, stick to a pair that will get you multiple uses. From beach days to nights out, these Madden NYC metallic gold sandals are a perfect match for all your vacation outfits. The flat sandals will keep your feet nice and cozy, even on all-day sightseeing trips, and they’re super easy to slip into your luggage.

This six-in-one Selfie Tripod from Bower is a great solution for easily capturing content while traveling, but it’s not just for influencers or content creators. If you’ve ever traveled by yourself, you know how hard it is to actually get yourself in your vacation photos. This tripod is an excellent tool for grabbing selfies, videos and live-action photography. Vicki also loves the lightweight portability it provides, “You could easily carry this around for a 10-hour day out exploring — it adds basically no weight to your purse!” Plus, if mom or dad are usually stuck being the photographer on family trips, this easy-to-use device ensures the whole crew can make it in the shot.

It doubles as a makeup primer that helps blur imperfections and keeps your makeup in place for up to 18 hours — ideal for long days filled with sightseeing!

RMN: What is your favorite destination you’ve visited so far?

Japan is my favorite— and I went there while I was still working in my corporate law job! I still dream about going back. It’s one of the most interesting and varied places I’ve ever been. There’s so much history, but also so much new culture, art, fashion and food.

RMN: Why is Walmart a go-to when shopping for an upcoming trip?

Living in New York City, shopping is wildly inconvenient. Being able to go on the Walmart app or the Walmart website and actually order everything I need and knowing it’s going to arrive before my trip with fast shipping is key! And Walmart’s fashion has been very on point over the last few years — they’ve really nailed the trends.

RMN: What is your packing style?

Very last minute because I do travel a lot! I am usually wildly unprepared until a few days before my trips. So getting that Walmart delivery of the stuff you realize that you’re out of is super important.

RMN: What advice do you have for aspiring travel content creators?

My biggest tip for aspiring travel content creators is just to start. There’s no perfect time! Even if you can’t travel that much at the beginning, your hometown is always exciting to somebody else or the areas within a two to three-hour drive are always exciting to somebody else seeing your content.
