Triumphant TikTok Christmas Tree Trends to Try Now

6 min

Our editors have long looked to Instagram and Pinterest for holiday decorating inspiration. Increasingly, however, we’re scrolling through TikTok to hunt down seasonal ideas that shine.

After all, TikTok isn’t just a social media platform for viral dance challenges, memes and POV videos. The popular social media app is also a handy tool for talented content creators to break down design ideas and decorating how-to guides into short-form videos that are accessible, entertaining and digestible.

With TikTok literally at our fingertips, amassing Christmas decorating inspiration has never been easier (or more enjoyable). Ahead, we’ve created a curated list of the most tantalizing TikTok Christmas tree decorating ideas and holiday trends for 2023.

The Home Depot Christmas Tree (aka the T27 Christmas Tree)

Around late October, a certain Christmas tree began popping up all over our TikTok feeds. Now, the Home Depot exclusive Pre-Lit LED Grand Duchess Balsam Fir Artificial Christmas Tree — also referred to as the Home Depot Christmas tree, the T27 Christmas tree or simply the TikTok Christmas Tree — has gone viral on the platform, amassing over 95 million views on its official hashtag, #ViralChristmasTree

It’s easy to see what the fuss is about. The Grand Duchess Balsam Fir is a majestic, eco-friendly artificial tree decked out in more than 2,000 color-changing lights. The tricked-out tree starts at $349 and comes in three different sizes — 7.5 feet, 9 feet and 12 feet — as well as a choice of full or slim. The Grand Duchess is currently sold out, but if it comes back in stock, you can purchase it here

TikTok creator @saraovershares managed to nab the 9-foot model of the coveted tree before it sold out. In a TikTok, she showed off what the tree looks like decorated — which is, in a word, magical.

TikToker @kaelimaee also managed to score her own model of the Home Depot Christmas tree. In a TikTok video, Kaeli demonstrated the process of setting up the towering 12-foot version, piece by piece. The influencer opted to keep things simple and forego ornaments — and the resulting effect is elegant, minimalist and striking.

Viral TikTok Christmas Tree Alternative

Don’t want to wait around for the viral Christmas tree to restock? TikTok creator and small business owner @madisonriddolls has the solution. In her video, Madison showed off an affordable alternative to the viral TikTok Christmas tree. Like the original, her stately artificial tree comes from Home Depot and is pre-lit with glimmering LED lights. It stands 7.5 feet tall and looks “more realistic” than the viral tree, according to Madison. Best of all, the Home Accents Holiday Christmas tree is available now — you can buy it at Home Depot for $489

VIRAL HOME DEPOT CHRISTMAS TREE ALTERNATIVE that is half the price and more realistic (in my opinion)✨🎄 This Christmas tree comes pre-lit with 1,500 soft white LED lights AND the twinkle lights are already on it! The branches look very natural too! We had to fluff them a bit, but it only took a few minutes 😍 Overall, we LOVE this tree and the proce of it! I’m debating even adding any ornaments.. what do you think?! #homedepot #christmastree #homedepottree #xmastree #viralchristmastree #homedepotchristmastree #sparklingchristmas

Balloons on Christmas Tree TikTok Trend

Balloons probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Christmas decor. (Birthdays and New Year’s, sure, but Christmas?) But — as TikTokers are demonstrating this year — balloons can be a brilliant ornament alternative. In addition to being ridiculously affordable, balloon ornaments can help save your holidays from shattered glass. The crafty creators of TikTok recommend spraying balloon ornaments with hairspray to make them last longer and gussy-ing them up with paint, glitter and rhinestones.

TikToker Ashley Geib, who goes by the handle @blushbubblyandbirch, showed off a glamorous interpretation of the balloons on Christmas tree TikTok trend in her video. In it, the content creator decorated her tree with a blend of balloons, bulbs and bows.

“Balloons are the new Christmas bulbs,” Ashley declared in the comments. In a previous video, she noted that balloons can create bulbs “as big as you like for pennies.”

TikToker @flairbyzaire also shared an inspired interpretation of the balloon ornament trend. In a TikTok video, the party planning expert demonstrated her design skills by enveloping a Christmas tree in a giant swirl of golden balloons. In the comments, Zaire advised audience members that the balloons can last for several months, but they may shrink when temperatures grow cold.

Looking for more holiday decor ideas? Since the season is still in its infancy and trends are still developing, we’ve also revisited some of the most noteworthy trends found in Christmas TikToks from last year. Here are some of our favorites:

Pampas Grass Christmas Trees

Image: Amazon

As the name suggests, pampas Christmas trees are trees made from fluffy pampas grass. These wispy, whimsical trees were all over TikTok last year, raking in more than seven million views.

You can DIY your own pampas tree out of real pampas grass, but we don’t recommend this option. Pampas grass is highly flammable and can create a fire hazard once you throw electric lights and holiday candles into the mix. Instead of a real pampas grass Christmas tree, go for an artificial pampas tree — like this eye-catching example from Amazon, which stands 7.5 feet high and comes pre-strung with 1,000 warm white rice lights.

Pompom Ornaments

Earning millions of views on the platform, pompon ornaments were another TikTok trend the internet went gaga for last Christmas. These adorable ornaments are super easy to make using wool, scissors and cardboard. Not feeling crafty? H&M has got you covered with this string of colorful pom-poms you can drape around your tree.

Macramé Ornaments

Here’s another Christmas TikTok trend you can DIY (or not). Macramé ornaments, which have earned more than one million views on the platform, are a unique and playful decoration you make on your own for basically the cost of string. If you need a little more guidance, however, you can purchase this make-your-own macramé ornament kit, which includes instructions plus everything you need to DIY your own cute hanging gnome ornaments.

Christmas Tree Ribbons

Ribbons can do wonders for tying your tree decor together into one cohesive look — as TikTok collectively discovered last Christmas. The hashtag, #christmastreeribbon, amassed more than seven million views.

Christmas tree ribbons don’t have to be made of a special type of ribbon — they can essentially come in any style and be made of any material — whether lace, velvet or even burlap. Amazon (predictably) has a variety of ribbon options. We love this set of three, which includes 30 yards of two-inch-wide red plaid, black and white plaid and burlap ribbon.

Disco Ball Christmas Tree Ornaments

Last year, ’twas the season of decking out your Christmas tree in disco balls. The hashtag #discoballchristmastree raked in hundreds of thousands of views. It’s not hard to understand the appeal of dressing up your fir in disco ball ornaments. Disco balls are sparkly and festive and can spruce up your spruce with a hint of ’70s nostalgia. To nail this Christmas TikTok trend, try this 12-piece collection of mini disco ball ornaments from World Market, which glimmer in gold, silver and rose gold.
