The charity AmazonSmile will no longer be available after Amazon’s decision to cut costs.
What was AmazonSmile?
Using the Amazon URL amazonsmile.com, .5% of your Amazon purchase would go to a charity of your choosing. Their motto: “You Shop. Amazon Gives.” In your settings you were able to choose whatever charity touched your heart, allowing thousands of customers to give locally to small charities. Although Amazon never integrated AmazonSmile into their app, people were still able to purchase through the designated web browser.
How Will This Effect Charities?
Amazon has concluded that because such a small percentage went to various different charities, AmazonSmile wouldn’t be missed. Although most charities received only a small amount in donations, they were still a welcome added income for a multitude of charities not only nationwide, but worldwide. The decision to cut Amazon smiles has come as quite a shock to everyone, making some charities nervous for what will come.
Along with ending this charitable endeavor, Amazon has also layed off more than 18,000 employees, the single largest layoff seen in a technology company. We hope Amazon has something up their sleeve that can help substantiate this major loss worldwide.
