BOEING LEARNING LAB AT THE MARITIME CENTER

The South Carolina Aquarium broke ground on renovations for a new multidisciplinary learning center, the Boeing Learning Lab at the Charleston Maritime Center. It will be comprised of 8,500 square feet that includes four indoor classrooms, one open-air classroom, a broadcast studio to conduct virtual programs and office space for Aquarium staff. Opening 2024.

BOONE HALL COTTON GIN HOUSE RENOVATION

This historic cotton gin building was developed in the 1850’s. During the years the McRae family had owned Boone Hall Plantation, it was home to a gift shop and restaurant called Serena’s Kitchen. A decision was made to remodel the interior in 2006. The interior was excavated and braces were put up on the outside of the building to support the brick structure and maintain the historical integrity of the building. The renovated facility features a new visitor center and a museum that spans over three centuries of history. There is a gift shop and event space upstairs that can be used for a variety of purposes. Opened September 2023.

Charles Pinckney National Historic Site and its visitor’s center have undergone numerous improvements to protect the historic integrity of the park resource. A new cedar shingle roof has been installed, copper gutters and downspouts have been replaced, and storm shutters have been rehabilitated on the 1828 historic plantation home. The park features new interactive museum exhibits, a walking trail, picnic area, and junior ranger program for kids. The park highlights the Pinckney family, Charles Pinckney’s contributions to the US Constitution, enslavement at Snee Farm and the Gullah Geechee culture. Opened July 2023.
